Chiropractor Q & A

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends the first chiropractic visit as soon as possible after birth. This first visit will allow you and your child to meet with the doctors so they can evaluate and discuss proper spinal health.

At Oak Brook Medical Group we promote spinal health in all ages!! The “growing years” are the most important years in the maturity of posture and the nervous system, the control center of the body.

Before the First Visit

When scheduling the appointment, if possible, try to make it a time when both parents can attend. We encourage both parents to attend as this is an opportunity to ask questions and learn about what opportunities chiropractic has to offer the family.

Parents can help make their child’s first chiropractic visit an enjoyable one by being positive about the experience! If possible, please have your child fed and well-rested. The doctors will explain each procedure in “child friendly” terms that they can easily understand and enjoy!

The First Visit

One of the doctors will review the health history form with you at the first visit. You are welcome to discuss the health history with your child in the room, or one of our staff members can watch the child so you can easily discuss fears, anxieties, and/or concerns without the child present. The doctors will perform a complete examination of your child’s spine and nervous system.

Spinal radiographs will be taken only if one of the doctors feels it is necessary. Rarely are films taken on children under the age of 10. If additional procedures are required, they will be scheduled for a later date.

What If My Child Cries?

Please do not be upset if your child cries. Crying is a normal reaction to the unknown and it is not unusual for younger children to be anxious of anything new or strange. We are trained to help fearful children through this experience. It is our goal for children to promote children’s self-esteem and allow them to have fun in our office. Kids make GREAT patients and often look forward to their chiropractic treatments!

Children’s adjustments are tailored specifically to a child’s spine and are very gentle and enjoyable. These adjustments are much gentler because a child’s joints are looser and easier to move, plus children generally heal much more quickly than adults.

Chiropractic Adjustments: Why They Work

The human body has complex systems for maintaining optimal function and homeostasis. When we experience mechanical strain or trauma, the body reacts by sending signals to the brain that it is in need of repair. These signals change nerve impulses and muscle contractions, resulting in tissue inflammation and pain.

When the spine suffers from misalignment and dysfunction, it causes irritation and eventually leads to the degeneration of the entire body’s tissues, ligaments, muscles, and joints. When this happens, all parts of the body become affected.

By manually adjusting the spine, chiropractors can help restore proper alignment and neurological balance. Improving circulation through the extremities increases the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to areas needing healing, reducing inflammation and promoting faster recovery.

With regular visits to a chiropractor, the body can return to normalcy, allowing the nervous system to heal naturally without interference.

When to See a Chiropractor

  • If you are experiencing acute symptoms such as extreme discomfort, sharp pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling, or weakness in your neck, shoulders, arms, legs, or feet.
  • If you are suffering from chronic upper or lower back pain, headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia, or other pains, see a chiropractor regularly to prevent or minimize future problems.
  • If you are having difficulty sleeping, feel sluggish, or experience anxiety or depression, chiropractors may be able to provide relief.
  • If you feel like something’s not right with your posture, see a chiropractor to assess and manage any issues.

Holistic Chiropractic Care Approach: Healthy Bodies Require Healthy Minds

The holistic approach at Oak Brook Medical Group focuses on the whole person. This includes addressing the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of a person in order to improve overall wellness.

Our medical doctors, chiropractors, and therapists work together to develop an individualized treatment plan for every patient based on their unique needs and goals. They utilize cutting-edge technology and traditional methods to identify and correct the root cause of musculoskeletal pain and disease.

Our practitioners use soft tissue techniques to reduce muscle spasms, nerve impingement, tendonitis, and other sources of tension that can contribute to injury and pain. This helps them pinpoint the source of a problem and then treat it effectively.

In addition to working with the body, we integrate mind and spirit into our care. Our primary goal is to help clients achieve optimum wellness using evidence-based practices. We encourage patients to make positive changes that lead to long-lasting results through patient education, exercise, nutrition, lifestyle change, and stress reduction techniques.

What Are the Benefits of Receiving Long-Term Chiropractic Care?

Per the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, research has found that people report positive experiences and reduced pain as a result of receiving spinal manipulation.

Those who receive chiropractic care might notice improvements in their quality of life—both physically and mentally. Many people enjoy improved energy levels and better sleep patterns after seeing a chiropractor for regular visits.

When you receive regular chiropractic services, you can access noninvasive treatment options for back pain, neck pain, headaches, and so on. These include massage therapy, spinal manipulation, rehabilitation exercises, nutritional counseling, and much more—all designed to improve your quality of life.

Your chiropractor has the tools and experience necessary to restore your spine’s natural alignment. With continued chiropractic care, you may be able to prevent future problems like soreness, stiffness, back pain, and inflammation.
